When Is the Best Time to Build a Pool in North Louisiana?

Most homeowners wait until April or May to start thinking about a pool — right when the weather gets warm and the idea of swimming becomes irresistible. That's also when every pool builder in the region is slammed, permits take longer, and you're looking at a late-summer or fall completion at best.

Here's the truth: the best time to build a pool in North Louisiana is fall and winter. Here's why, broken down month by month.

September–November: The Sweet Spot

Fall is the ideal time to start pool construction in the Shreveport-Bossier area. The soil is still workable after summer rains, temperatures are mild enough that concrete cures properly without overheating, and — most importantly — pool builders have availability. A pool started in September or October can be swim-ready by March or April, just as the weather warms up.

Shotcrete pools particularly benefit from fall construction. Concrete needs to cure at temperatures above 40°F, and North Louisiana's fall temperatures (60-80°F) are in the ideal curing range. Summer's 95°F+ heat can actually cause concrete to cure too fast, leading to surface cracking and weaker structural integrity.

December–February: Cold Weather, Warm Planning

Yes, you can build a pool in winter in Louisiana. We rarely see sustained freezes, and when we do, they're brief. Excavation, steel installation, and shotcrete can all be done in winter with minor adjustments (thermal blankets for curing concrete, etc.).

The main advantage of winter construction is scheduling. Permits are processed faster because parish building departments are less busy. Material suppliers have shorter lead times. And you'll have your pool ready for the first warm days of spring — while everyone else is just starting to get quotes.

March–May: The Rush

Spring is when everyone wants a pool. Inquiries spike 300% from February to March. If you start in March, expect a June or July completion — which means you miss the first half of swim season. Permit timelines stretch from 2 weeks to 4-6 weeks. Material availability tightens.

If spring is when you're ready, we can make it work, but set realistic expectations. A vinyl liner pool started in March can still be ready by May because the construction timeline is shorter (1 week active construction vs. 6 weeks for shotcrete).

June–August: The Hardest Time

Summer pool construction is possible but challenging. The heat affects workers, materials, and curing times. Afternoon thunderstorms in June and July can delay excavation and shotcrete by days at a time. And you're paying for a pool you won't swim in until it's almost fall.

However, summer is an excellent time for the design consultation and 3D rendering phase. You can see your yard at its most lush, understand shade patterns, and plan for fall construction with a fully approved design ready to go.

Permit Timelines in North Louisiana

Pool permits in Caddo and Bossier parishes typically take 1-2 weeks for approval, but this varies by season and parish. In Shreveport city limits, you'll need electrical and plumbing permits in addition to the building permit. In unincorporated areas of Caddo and Bossier parishes, the process is slightly simpler. DeSoto Parish (Stonewall, Frierson, Mansfield) and Webster Parish (Minden, Benton) have their own permit offices with similar timelines.

We handle all permit applications as part of our design-build service. You don't deal with the building department — we do.

The Bottom Line

If you want to swim next spring, start this fall. Book your design consultation in August or September, approve the 3D design by October, and break ground before Thanksgiving. You'll have a backyard resort ready for the first warm day of spring — and you'll avoid the spring rush that delays everyone else.

They replaced our patio cover which we lost in the big ice storm. It took us a year and a half to find someone to fix it. It was Blue Tide Exteriors. It took them 2 days and it is so pretty. They worked with our budget. They did a great job.
