Because the shell is solid concrete, shotcrete pools can be built in any shape or depth — infinity edges, beach entries, tanning ledges, deep diving wells, and integrated spas are all on the table. The interior finish can be white plaster, colored plaster, quartz, pebble, or glass tile.

What Is a Vinyl Liner Pool?

A vinyl liner pool uses a steel, polymer, or aluminum wall panel system set into the ground. A custom-cut vinyl liner is then installed over the panels to create the waterproof barrier. The wall panels come in standardized shapes (rectangle, Grecian, kidney, etc.), but custom layouts are possible by combining panels.

Modern vinyl liners are significantly better than those from 20 years ago. Today's liners are 28-30 mil thick, UV-resistant, and available in dozens of patterns that mimic tile, stone, or mosaic. A quality liner lasts 10-15 years before needing replacement, and replacement costs $3,000-$5,000.

Design Flexibility

This is where shotcrete pulls ahead. Because shotcrete is sprayed into any shape, you can have a pool that curves organically around existing trees, follows the natural grade of your yard, or includes architectural features like sunken fire pits built into the pool wall, infinity edges, and beach entries.

Vinyl liner pools are more geometric by nature. While modern panel systems allow for kidney shapes, L-shapes, and Roman ends, you're working within the constraints of manufactured panel sizes. If your vision requires a truly one-of-a-kind organic shape, shotcrete is the way to go.

Louisiana Climate Considerations

North Louisiana's clay-rich soil expands and contracts significantly between wet and dry seasons. This ground movement is the #1 enemy of any pool shell.

However, severe shifting can cause panels to become uneven, which may require re-leveling.

• Shotcrete: Plaster finish needs re-plastering every 10-15 years ($8,000-$15,000). Acid washing every 3-5 years. Staining is more visible on plaster than on vinyl.
• Vinyl Liner: Liner replacement every 10-15 years ($3,000-$5,000). No acid washing needed. Stains don't penetrate vinyl the way they do plaster. Be cautious with sharp objects — a torn liner needs patching or replacement.
